Vision: The establishment of the National Biosafety Framework of Sri Lanka so that the advantages of modern biotechnology can be harnessed in a safe and responsible manner for the benefit of the people of Sri Lanka.

Mission: To set in place a system of legal, technical and administrative mechanisms in the form of a framework, to address safety in using modern biotechnology inline with reference to safe transfer, handling and use of any living modified organism  [ LMO = GMO ( Genetically modified Organisms) ] resulting from biotechnology that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, the environment, as well as on human & animal health. 

The Project is expected to include the following elements:

  • National Policy on Biotechnology and Biosafety
  • Established Regulatory regime-Precautionary Principles
  • Administrative system for Risk Assessment and Management base on AIA
  • Awareness - on GMO/GMF for different target groups
  • Database on Biotechnology and Biosafety
  • Capacity  Building
  • Research and Development
  • Public Participation
